The Close Hotel

  : The restaurant's dinner was outstanding. Three of us had the Chateaubriand "special," and we agreed that it was the best meal we had on our 10 day trip. The meat was perfectly cooked and the presentation was gorgeous. One night was very rainy so it was great that the hotel had a Scrabble game available in the lounge. Also, we thought the garden was lovely (too wet and cold to use when we visited), and it was nice that so many people (and their dogs) came to tea or drinks in the bar. We met several locals in the bar and had fun with them. The location on High Street was great because we didn't have a car and the village is charming. (We hired a taxi to take us to/from Highgrove and pick us up at the train station in Kemble.) At the Tourist office we learned of a concert at the local Community Center and it was fantastic--so glad we went. It would be great if he hotel could have a "local events today/tomorrow" board to advertise things to do that we might not otherwise know about...
  : There was no one available to carry our (heavy) luggage up or down the stairs, which were historic and therefore uneven. The cleaner carried them much to our astonishment--so nice of her! The bed was comfortable but it was also hot because there was only a heavy duvet and no lightweight alternative. The room was stuffy because the casements could not be opened because of the heavy rain. The door lock should be adjusted because it needs quite a bit of jiggling to open or close. Like most English hotels, there's no electrical outlets in the bathroom and insufficient ones (for charging phones) in the main bedroom (ie had to leave cables and phones on the floor.)We only learned later that there is a local Tetbury taxi because the taxi we were told about by the hotel hired came all the way from Cirencester (I think) and we paid for that. Also, the taxi asked for cash (said wifi "didn't go thru at Highgrove) so that meant we had to go find an ATM (the nearest had no money so we walked pretty far to Tesco for an ATM--inconvenient and ATM fee of course.)

  : Beautiful garden with patio and outdoor seating. Quirky layout and individual design to our room. Welcoming and free parking at rear of hotel. All in all a first class hotel.Food was delicious and great trouble had obviously been taken over preparation and presentation
  : Many different doors and corridors over a few levels may make this hotel not suitable for disabled people. Our room was accessed by a spiral staircase. Handrails were available throughout the hotel to help negotiate stairs.
