Hotel Splendid

Very Good

: Excellent Hotel, excellent location on the lake with its own Beach and Boat-dock. We stayed there in Sept. 2017 and again in August 2023. The Hotel is very large, and it accommodates mostly tourists and tour-groups. It can be considered a 4-star quality hotel for its furnishings and services.
: The Staff at the restaurant are all very friendly and speak English, but we rate the restaurant a little below 4-stars because the service is not to standard, a little unorganized, which mostly points towards a lack of exacting and demanding managerial skill. Furthermore, the dishes are high in price and rather sparing in portions - giving the impression that "design" of "nouvelle cuisine" is back in vogue in the kitchen.

Disappointing

: Beautiful location, beautiful views, beautiful interiors
: The hotel was disappointing because they are a four star hotel but they skimped on things and the staff were unacceptably dismissive and rude for a hotel of this price range. The safe in the room was non-functional, the doors to the shower didnt close effectively, the mini bar was empty. The biggest issue was when we tried to use the gym. We asked to use it and were told we would have to pay as we had a room with a partial lake view, and gym use was only included in the rack rate for suites. The first staff member who told us this was dismissive and rude. The second staff member we spoke to, the manager, proceeded to have an argument with us when we said said gym fees were not advertised alongside other fee-for-use equipment like the tennis court. She said it was on the website, then looked it up while we were standing there, and of course it wasnt on the website. We said fee-for-use of gym was unique among the seven other 4/5 star properties in Italy we were staying in this trip; she said it wasnt; we called the others and of course they all said gym was included. The really galling thing though was when the manager asked us to wait in our room while she called the hotel owner. She called us back and said I called the owner, and he agreed with me. But you can use the gym this time. At no point was there an apology for the specious arguments she advanced that it was advertised as such (it wasnt) or that it was standard practice (it wasnt). I felt like I was in a schoolroom with a teacher, not a customer paying 250/night for a room.

: The setting and grounds are absolutely gorgeous --wonderful place to take pictures of Lake Maggiore. The facilities are spotlessly clean and nice. When we were there it seemed like all of the other guests were on bus tours, so it felt like we were the only ones in the hotel during the day.
: The surprise extra fees at checkout left a horribly bad taste. The extra 5% service fee felt like a violation of our booking.com reservation. The fees for parking and gym were mentioned nowhere on booking or on the hotel's own website and were distressing. It would have been over 50 Euros per night per room EXTRA if they hadn't comped us the Eur 12 fee for the gym. Had we known about the extra costs, in advance, we probably would have reserved elsewhere. The treadmill in the gym didn't work and there was little other equipment in the gym. The swimming pool was a bracingly freezing experience. We chose not to have breakfast at the hotel because it looked very pallid, but there was a lovely cafe down the road. The staff made a big deal that they were upgrading us to a room with a view of the fire escape, but we had paid extra for the triple room already and I'm not certain that it was necessarily better than a room without the view of the dire escape. There was a constant buzz of traffic from the road. And the room had no kettle, no coffee maker, no water except one bottle at check-in with a paper cup and no glasses. The skimpiness on the little necessities left us always feeling like something was always lacking or that we would have to wait for service to pay extra for tons of basics that would be included elsewhere.
